Inside the incubator

Welcome to our new crib!

Welcome to our new crib! We are excited to showcase our new coworking space in central Berlin. Provided by Unicorn Workspaces in the beautiful AEG building, this is the home for our startups in 2022 and 2023. Whether the entrepreneurs are attending an on-site workshop, zooming into an online mentor session or just building their business, the startups benefit from the comforts of modern office spaces.

Barista Room at Unicorn Workspaces

Set in the stunning AEG complex, once one of the largest industrial sites in Berlin, our new crib includes an on-site barista team who help fuel the creativity with delicious coffees and energy boosting treats. When they’re not creating cappuccinos and playing beats, you can spot the team whizzing down the corridors on scooters to save precious minutes – something our startups know all so well! Time is everything when you’re innovating for the future.

Napping room for those needed moments

Inside Unicorn Workspaces, the startups can utilise phone booths for private meetings or when they need a power boost, relax in the napping room. This jewel of the workspace provides the perfect place to recharge and a place where you can escape from the world for a while. Phones are not allowed inside. So our entrepreneurs should hopefully feel relaxed after a visit.

Looking back, the Unicorn Workspaces is set in an impressive part of the city’s history. The complex is the former site of electrical company “Allgemeine-Electricitäts-Gesellschaft“ (AEG) am Humboldthain – this is the place that literally powered Berlin. Today it now helps power healthcare startups. Much of the site has been preserved and so even now we have a glimpse of how the industrial metropolis after 1890 helped Berlin become an electropolis.

With the dark red brick (bluish brick containing iron oxide on the façade), our new coworking space  is the perfect place for our startups to work hard but equally enjoy some downtime in some of Berlin’s best hangout spots – just a stone’s throw away.

If you’d like to benefit from this coworking space in Berlin, visit our application page to find out more about applying for the last cohort. Join us in July 2022 (apply before 23:59 CET on 15th April 2022).

Vision Health Pioneers Incubator On Tour!

We have recently returned to Berlin after a whirlwind adventure which took us to five different cities in Europe! Vision Health Pioneers Incubator on tour: our team and some of our alumni startups attended, presented and engaged with some of the best and brightest at leading healthcare events. Here’s a quick summary:

Towards the end of October we were at deGUT. We were very excited to co-host the Startup Arena and organised the showcase of startups from the Berlin Startup Scholarship and also from Brandenburg. This German founders fair has up to 3,000 guests per day and is the largest trade fair for business startups and entrepreneurs in Germany. One of the teams who joined us were minime. Paul Schneeweiß, Founder, shares thoughts on their experience at deGUT:

“deGut was a very exciting event. Interested people kept coming to our booth. I explained our idea again and again in the form of mini-pitches, without knowing which role each person had (user, investor, just interested). It was only through the individual reactions that I noticed what people really understood about our story and what they didn’t. This was very helpful to polish our pitch for upcoming investor rounds. In addition, it was great to meet remote contacts in real life, such as those from the IBB and the Businessangelclub Berlin Brandenburg.”

  • Paul Schneeweiß, Founder & Therapist, minime

In early November you could find some of our team in the blossoming ecosystem of Valencia where we joined leading investors, startups and companies at South Summit Valencia. The Mediterranean city is becoming an innovation hub with its fast-paced growth, high number of startups and solid health industry network. We also hopped over to Barcelona for some more networking with startups interested in joining our program.

“At South Summit Valencia we enjoyed many inspiring sessions, from investing in holistic health to medical regulatory to how to better frame the use of Ai. It was great to meet with the digital health community in Valencia and Barcelona.”

Vision Health Pioneers Incubator on tour!

Vision Health Pioneers Incubator were joined by startup alumni Advosense at MEDICA

In the middle of November, we were in Düsseldorf at MEDICA, the place where the whole world of medicine meets! Running for over 40 years, this is the largest event for the medical industry worldwide. We were delighted to be joined with alumni startup advosense and Breaz at the show. James Hugall, Co-Founder of Breaz shares their thoughts on MEDICA:

“MEDICA was a fantastic networking opportunity for us to explore new technologies and suppliers, scope out the competition and introduce our startup to the MedTech world. It was exciting to be face-to-face again with like-minded individuals at such a large international meeting with thousands of exhibitors. It far exceeded our expectations, with thanks to the Berlin Senate and Vision Health Pioneers Incubator for giving us such a great platform.”

  • James Hugall, Co-Founder, Breaz

It was wonderful to meet with others again in-person and spread the word about our Berlin startup incubator. If you or if you know of someone who is interested in finding out more about our program, please do join us for our next Ask Me Anything session on 7th December 2021. This online event begins at 17:00 CET and is ideal for those interested in joining our Batch#4 and Batch#5 cohorts. Whether you would prefer to begin your journey in April 2022 or July 2022, you can complete your application right now.

Our Mentors

Insights from the founder – mentor David Schaerf

We were delighted to recently interview David Schaerf, one of our mentors at Vision Health Pioneers Incubator. David shared his insights on his own founders journey and experience in healthcare but also advice for any entrepreneurs who are wanting to shape the future of digital healthcare. These lessons from someone who has founded companies is essential reading for those in or about to embark on their startup adventure and we thank David for his open answers.

You have vast experience in founding startups, what do you enjoy most about launching these?

In any venture the launch phase is uber exciting and even slightly more enjoyable than running an established company. I also enjoy the step before, which is to vet startup ideas and go through the motions of validating the viability of potential product concepts. In most cases these ideas don’t make it passed this first stage, which is a good thing as it saves time, sweat and tears down the road.

As a product expert – what knowledge do you enjoy passing onto other startups?

My mantra is: *without a great product, nothing else matters.* I often observe that “product” is often only one of many aspects that founders have on their radar and thus wait way too long to really deeply understand and subsequently solve the pain points of their intended users. Many founders have an amazing vision but struggle to set up the right product foundation and make critical mistakes right from the get go.

Especially at the outset, it is vital to get out of your comfort zone and immerse yourself into the intended environment and really identify and understand the pain point in as much detail as possible. Talk to as many patients, medical professionals, regulators, decision makers that you can get in front of. Value their feedback but extract only what is valuable to you and don’t get too distraught by skepticism of naysayers. As soon as you have a prototype or MVP, start testing and collect data that will help you understand if your hypotheses are proven correct, then iterate. Only then will you be able to have the insights needed to invest time and resources into new features or use cases. This is at the heart of my work as a mentor in the program as well as the advisory work I do at North Star Labs.

How did you enter this particular area of expertise?

In short: totally by serendipity. I was always very tech-savvy and had a heart for product development. I started my career in business consulting, working (on what was called *e-business* at the time) across various industries and was lucky enough to team up with talented people at the intersection of tech, strategy and product / UX. I had an epiphany while working for a Pharma client around 2011, realising that the healthcare sector was at a pivotal moment, ripe for massive disruption. So over a number of steps, I naively founded a digital health company at a time where scepticism was abundant and one healthcare executive even warned me that I might go to jail for our intended use of patient data (needless to say he wasn’t a fan of digital). I quickly had to learn about native app development, medical guidelines, regulatory frameworks and the ins and outs of the very complex German healthcare system.

“The German healtchare system is complex to say the least and founders need to understand and speak the right “language” to be taken seriously by stakeholders.”

What is the biggest advantage and also greatest challenge for entering the German market?

One clear advantage is certainly the size of the market and its advanced regulatory environment in a somewhat homogenous European market, offering various pathways for medical products that have proven medical evidence. At the same time, these pathways require significant investment into areas such as data privacy, clinical evidence, quality management, interoperability, etc. The German healtchare system is complex to say the least and founders need to understand and speak the right “language” to be taken seriously by stakeholders. Another advantage is that the German digital health ecosystem is growing and becoming quite robust, especially the hub in and around Berlin.

At this moment in time, how do you view the current digital health space in Germany?

Having been part of the first wave of the German digital health startup scene and witnessing its progress over the last decade, it is no understatement to say that the last 18 months have been immensely positive for our sector. The impact of Covid-19 has created a tsunami, in the positive sense, leapfrogging digital health transformation forward by at least 5-10 years. So while some effects may be short term, flattening out over the next 1-2 years, most changes will be permanent and hopefully creating a golden decade for digital health.

Insights from mentor David Schaerf "I know how demanding it is to juggle the fast-paced curriculum while building a company at the same time. Therefore try to avoid the temptation to cut corners and rush through the program because you think you need to focus only on your business. Instead, really make an effort to immerse yourself into the program and make full use of the mentor network as this will benefit your company long term."

What do you enjoy most about coaching the entrepreneurs in Vision Health Pioneers Incubator?

Throughout my career I’ve been lucky to have had great mentors and coaches that helped me make bigger steps than I would otherwise have been able to make. Now being able to give back is rewarding on a number of levels, most notably revisiting some of the same crossroads and being able to draw on my experience to help founders make difficult decisions

What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur who is thinking of entering a program like this?

Having been a participant as a founder myself and now being a mentor on a number of programs, I know how demanding it is to juggle the fast-paced curriculum while building a company at the same time. Therefore try to avoid the temptation to cut corners and rush through the program because you think you need to focus only on your business. Instead, really make an effort to immerse yourself into the program and make full use of the mentor network as this will benefit your company long term. It’s unlikely that you will have access to such amazing resources for free (and zero equity) any time soon.

“Be patient and have faith; most things will take twice as long as initially planned and often enough the path to success is not yet visible when you initially set out.”

Is there any advice you would give to your younger self?

Be patient and have faith; most things will take twice as long as initially planned and often enough the path to success is not yet visible when you initially set out. Life is not a sprint race but a marathon and it’s very easy to forget to enjoy the journey. Often enough times of struggle are those that you cherish most when you look back later in life. Ps: buy bitcoin at $10

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Some things are simply not meant to be. So don’t run after opportunities that are not working out. In life and business we sometimes come across opportunities, which seem so grand and important that we chase them with the utmost perseverance while possibly ignoring our instinct, advice from peers or our long term vision. Often enough you will find out later why an opportunity did not work out and why that is a blessing in disguise.

If you were hosting a dinner party, who would be your dream guests (dead of alive) and why?

I would invite a colorful mix of some of my idols, inspiring inventors, entrepreneurs and artists: Michelle Obama (amazing charisma and leadership), Bill Campbell (possibly the best creator of team culture and spirit), Steve Jobs (vision of technolgy this century and beyond), Sylvia A. Earle (her vast experience in ocean exploration and conservation), Leonardo da Vinci (as the most amazing inventor of all time: how can we stop global warming), Coco Chanel (her influence in female leadership and design), Tony Robbins (the amazing energy), Sean Connery (beyond charismatic and cool), Nikola Tesla (how would he solve the clean energy challenge), Snoop Dogg (as master of ceremony), Albert Einstein (his ideas about the universe and the future of mankind).

Presenting the Vision Health Pioneers Incubator Magazine!

We are delighted to present our new magazine ‘The Journey So Far…” which showcases exactly what it says, the journey of Vision Health Pioneers Incubator since the idea first began in 2019! Readers can discover this journey in a special ‘Milestones’ section which highlights some of the amazing feats our startups and the incubator achieved.

As the name of the magazine suggests, the journey is far from over but so much has been completed that we wanted to share what has happened in 2020 and 2021. Within these pages we present over 40 entrepreneurs across 13 teams who have been supported in our incubator in Berlin. Many more will go through the program in 2022 and 2023.

In the magazine we share the stories of all the exciting startups who have been joining us and received training from our inspiring mentors and coaches. The success of Vision Health Pioneers Incubator isn’t possible without our network of over 150 healthcare partner experts. Whilst we couldn’t include them all in the magazine, we have highlighted a handful who are fine examples of what activity takes place through strong collaboration. Our huge thanks to all our mentors, coaches and partners for the thrilling time so far.

Within the startup stories, readers can discover more about what drives the entrepreneurs, what they are doing to improve the healthcare system and often what they enjoy most about the program.

Overall we showcase Berlin, long the capital of entrepreneurs, and we interview the Berlin Senate who make this all possible alongside the European Social Fund (ESF) and European Union.

We strive to continue to connect healthcare innovators from all over Europe. Enjoy flicking through our magazine:

Meet the governmental backbone of the Berlin Startup Scholarship Program

They relentlessly support young entrepreneurs and make Berlin a powerhouse for startups – the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises of the State of Berlin. Meet the governmental backbone of the Berlin Startup Scholarship Program.

We were delighted to speak with the leading forces behind the Berlin Startup Scholarship, Norbert Herrmann and Mirko Jäkel. Together with their colleagues they have created a framework which fuels Berlin’s growth in global settings. Berlin is renowned as a destination for innovation, but it’s their tireless efforts that’s behind why the German capital is the hotspot for entrepreneurialism. We explored more about how their efforts are modernizing the economy ecologically and securing and creating jobs.

They are in many ways pushing the good ship of innovation forward with their activities – Making Berlin an attractive commercial and industrial location, utilising the reservoir of qualified and motivated specialists in and around the city and finding results in impressive creative diversity along with a high quality of life.

Norbert Herrmann

Meet the governmental backbone of the Berlin Startup Scholarship Program, Mirko Jäkel, Policy Issues Startup Scholarship, Regular structural policy, Business Development; Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises
Mirko Jäkel

Norbert Herrmann, is very well known in the startup world. For some time he has tirelessly been one of the most active spokespersons for startups at a federal government level. He manages and supports large and small projects by creating enabling environments. He is joined by Mirko Jäkel who is equally integral for making things tick. They hold different roles within all the activity around the Berlin Startup Scholarship and are also quite different characters. Mirko operates in a specialised department and is responsible for framing the conditions for programs like the Vision Health Pioneers Incubator and essentially fueling them now and into the future. Norbert on the other hand has an overall view of the startups ecosystem and describes his role as “having a telephone and a Linkedin account. Through that I try to understand and listen and then translate startup activity into the thinking of the Berlin administration.” This also works the other way, so startups understand more about how things operate inside the Berlin Senate. They are modest in their roles but are both heroes behind the Berlin startup scene.

Despite the differences in activity, Nobert and Mirko are united on one clear goal – to support startups in order to support Berlin. They are good spirited and both curious to always discover what’s working and isn’t working and how they can make things even better.

Meet the governmental backbone of the Berlin Startup Scholarship Program – The Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises

The Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises does not specialise in any single topic when it comes to startups. They focus on any solution that can help the city prosper and grow. Sectors of interest include healthcare but also energy transition, mobility, female entrepreneurs, green tech – any area that can help to build Berlin. Mirko describes more about this. “There are many excellent ideas in different fields being produced in the city. We have been really glad to receive extra funds from EU React so we could focus on the impact of Covid19 and on supporting solutions.” Vision Health Pioneers Incubator for example will continue for another two years after more than 3 million Euro of public funding has been invested. With the most recent support originating from a special European Union’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mirko continues, “What makes the Berlin Startup Scholarship so different to others out there is that it’s early-stage focused. The funding is provided at the idea stage, or as a prototype is being constructed. Other programs focused on latter stages of development. This is obviously great for the overall ecosystem, but we ensure startups don’t miss out on key information, such as how to go to market or enter the market as a first time founder.” The duo share how there are other pre-seed programs available but there are actually not that many in Berlin.

Berlin has a renowned history with startups
Berlin has a renowned history with startups

On asking why Berlin has such a renowned history with startups, Norbert explains that there is no single answer but that the secret ingredient may be that Berlin is simply a cool place for young people. “Berlin has attracted lots of people, from all over the world, with crazy ideas and they have turned them into a reality. The famous startups successes are the likes of Zalando or Rocket Internet, who now operate in an alumni of businesses that were created and succeeded here. To be successful in the startup ecosystem takes time and Berlin was early enough to do this.” Norbert also emphasizes how there are other locations in Germany that have thriving startups ecosystems – however Berlin already has a wealth of contacts and that can make a difference.

Norbert and Mikro agree that a healthcare program needs to be in Berlin due to how powerful the industry is in the capital. But what’s interesting to observe now is that in other sectors, the experts and investors are coming into Berlin to meet the startups. Norbert shares more on this. “The startups are here. So family offices for example are coming to Berlin to make connections to them. Even with finance – which you would think of as being housed in Frankfurt – most of the finance startups are here in Berlin.”

Both are clearly proud to be working in this area. They share warm smiles when discussing how the startups are being supported and how they help turn visions into realities. However it isn’t all completely perfect just yet as Norbert explains. “On the other hand I’m frustrated because a lot of good ideas are not being realised. They may not like the bureaucratic way that things need to be done or how the money available must be used in a certain way.”

“We started in 2016 and the plan was to support 1,300 talents with a scholarship till the end of the funding period in 2023. With the last round now starting we’ll surely reach 1,800.”

Despite these feelings, Mirko shares how they have been succeeding with the majority of startups. “We started in 2016 and the plan was to support 1,300 talents with a scholarship till the end of the funding period in 2023. With the last round now starting we’ll surely reach 1,800.” This is an incredible achievement and despite the praise, both Mirko and Norbert are quick to say the praise is for the incubators and the startups.

Experts in and around the Incubator

With the news that Vision Health Pioneers Incubator has been awarded another two years, Norbert says that the wealth of mentors and coaches the Incubator works with, makes a difference. “Knowing that healthcare professionals are involved in the Incubator means you really know what the problems are. We see that in nearly every successful incubator – they have a network of people who work or operate in that particular field. I hope in the future, various programs can share their knowledge or people in a way where if one is missing a crucial coach, another can support and provide this.” This evolution is an exciting vision for Norbert and their activity with the Berlin Startup Scholarship.

Berlin has many startups that are now fully fledged businesses and therefore Norbert questions whether the word ‘startups’ is even as relevant as it once was before. “Maybe the word will disappear. HelloFresh – which now is to be part of DAX40, the German index of leading shares – isn’t really a startup anymore, but is famed as being one. We may be saying ‘early stage companies’ and ‘grown up companies’ because it is different now to how it was before. But no matter the words used, we will always need innovative fresh ideas time and time again. To help Berlin continue to attract people. We as a department and administration will support that. We are drivers but we are not managing it. The programs are doing the best job and we must ensure we listen to them. For the small things and for the big things. We keep the ball rolling.”

Mirko adds a lasting point. “We hope in the future to have more and more solutions that solve problems we don’t even know exist yet. Startups grow into companies and in turn they hire more employees and we grow the economy from Berlin.” It’s an exciting future and with Mirko and Norbert leading the way, Berlin is set to continue to move forward into a thrilling future.

Summary of ‘Into The Future’ our 2021 Demo Day

At the end of August 2021 we held our second Demo Day with our collection of startups in the second cohort. The hybrid event was streamed live around the world via our YouTube channel and guests also joined us in Palisa in central Berlin. Our six Vision Health Pioneers Incubator 2021 startups pitched their healthcare innovation and took questions on their innovative solutions to healthcare problems.

The event included a keynote address from Dr Daniel Kraft M.D., leader in the future of health, medicine and technology. The Faculty Chair for Medicine, Singularity University and Founder and Chair, Exponential Medicine has previously given four fascinating TED Talks. The Demo Day was moderated by the cutting-edge video journalist and idea engine Nicole Scott. What does INTO THE FUTURE mean for our community? Part 2

We have been asking our insightful community of supporters, mentors, coaches and partners what they think of when it comes to ‘Into The Future’? – For their thoughts on what innovation may happen in the near future, gaps that need solving in healthcare, what they can see in their crystal ball and more. We are thrilled to share their sharp, knowing and animating answers in part 2 of this series.
(Read part 1 here)

We are always fascinated by how our startups can find solutions to complex healthcare problems. At our INTO THE FUTURE Demo Day on 31st August 2021 the startups will present their businesses and explain how they solve issues for now and for the future. But we are equally as fascinating by what our community think of when it comes to the topic of ‘Into The Future’. Here are some of their answers…

Aline Noizet, Founder, Digital Health Connector

What do you think will be the biggest change in healthcare in the next 5 years?

Decentralized care! The care is going where the patient is, instead of the patient going to the primary care center or hospital. People are being more empowered and will be able to consume healthcare from wherever they want 24/7.

What kind of innovation do you want to see happen in the future of healthcare?

Monitoring innovation that will enable each of us to track our health continuously and take action early if needed. Those innovations should empower us and treat us as persons, so we understand clearly what is happening and the course of action to take, from prevention to cure. Personalized lifestyle recommendations based on our DNA and microbiome profile for us to be at our full potential.

Where are the gaps right now in healthcare that need solving first?

Regulation. Have a clear regulatory framework, coordinated and interoperable between countries.
Data sharing. Being able to access and process data in order to advance drug development, improve treatments.
Involve patients and healthcare professionals more in the development of technological solutions

What can you see in your crystal ball? What does Into The Future of healthcare mean for you?

Empowered patients! Patients as CEO of their own health, participating fully in the decisions made about their health and supported by the right tools and care team (human part is key!). Personalized treatment made for me!

Michael Hübner, Projektmanager, Sana Digital

What do you think will be the biggest change in healthcare in the next 5 years?

In my opinion there will be several big trends that will change healthcare as we know it in the next 5 years, such as personalized medicine through gene sequencing, connected devices (iot) and telemedicine, move to cloud, establishment of platforms, data and analytics for evidence based medicine, transformation from inpatient towards more outpatient care, rise of value-based healthcare, etc. Choosing one is difficult. – For the next 5 years I would assume that the establishment of an international market leading healthcare platform combining a lot of the earlier named topics for customers/patients will have the largest impact changing the delivery of healthcare throughout the continuum of care as we know it.

What kind of innovation do you want to see happen in the future of healthcare?

More value-based patient centric and evidence based healthcare replacing old procedures instead of adding on and thereby making healthcare not just more effective but also more efficient and economically sustainable.

Where are the gaps right now in healthcare that need solving first?

Education and primary prevention can have a large impact on population health and thereby lower healthcare spendings as well as improving public health and the quality of life.

If you could drop everything right now and create any related product or service – what would it be?

I would probably aim to team up with big healthcare payer and provider to create a digital platform integrating the concept of HMO and ACO to provide state of the art highly digitized affordable healthcare services to selected customer

What can you see in your crystal ball? What does Into The Future of healthcare mean for you?

I will improve healthcare on a systematic level as part of the digital strategy department of one Germanys largest integrated healthcare provider.
