Vision Health Pioneers Incubator On Tour!

We have recently returned to Berlin after a whirlwind adventure which took us to five different cities in Europe! Vision Health Pioneers Incubator on tour: our team and some of our alumni startups attended, presented and engaged with some of the best and brightest at leading healthcare events. Here’s a quick summary:

Towards the end of October we were at deGUT. We were very excited to co-host the Startup Arena and organised the showcase of startups from the Berlin Startup Scholarship and also from Brandenburg. This German founders fair has up to 3,000 guests per day and is the largest trade fair for business startups and entrepreneurs in Germany. One of the teams who joined us were minime. Paul Schneeweiß, Founder, shares thoughts on their experience at deGUT:

“deGut was a very exciting event. Interested people kept coming to our booth. I explained our idea again and again in the form of mini-pitches, without knowing which role each person had (user, investor, just interested). It was only through the individual reactions that I noticed what people really understood about our story and what they didn’t. This was very helpful to polish our pitch for upcoming investor rounds. In addition, it was great to meet remote contacts in real life, such as those from the IBB and the Businessangelclub Berlin Brandenburg.”

  • Paul Schneeweiß, Founder & Therapist, minime

In early November you could find some of our team in the blossoming ecosystem of Valencia where we joined leading investors, startups and companies at South Summit Valencia. The Mediterranean city is becoming an innovation hub with its fast-paced growth, high number of startups and solid health industry network. We also hopped over to Barcelona for some more networking with startups interested in joining our program.

“At South Summit Valencia we enjoyed many inspiring sessions, from investing in holistic health to medical regulatory to how to better frame the use of Ai. It was great to meet with the digital health community in Valencia and Barcelona.”

Vision Health Pioneers Incubator on tour!

Vision Health Pioneers Incubator were joined by startup alumni Advosense at MEDICA

In the middle of November, we were in Düsseldorf at MEDICA, the place where the whole world of medicine meets! Running for over 40 years, this is the largest event for the medical industry worldwide. We were delighted to be joined with alumni startup advosense and Breaz at the show. James Hugall, Co-Founder of Breaz shares their thoughts on MEDICA:

“MEDICA was a fantastic networking opportunity for us to explore new technologies and suppliers, scope out the competition and introduce our startup to the MedTech world. It was exciting to be face-to-face again with like-minded individuals at such a large international meeting with thousands of exhibitors. It far exceeded our expectations, with thanks to the Berlin Senate and Vision Health Pioneers Incubator for giving us such a great platform.”

  • James Hugall, Co-Founder, Breaz

It was wonderful to meet with others again in-person and spread the word about our Berlin startup incubator. If you or if you know of someone who is interested in finding out more about our program, please do join us for our next Ask Me Anything session on 7th December 2021. This online event begins at 17:00 CET and is ideal for those interested in joining our Batch#4 and Batch#5 cohorts. Whether you would prefer to begin your journey in April 2022 or July 2022, you can complete your application right now.

Summary of ‘Into The Future’ our 2021 Demo Day

At the end of August 2021 we held our second Demo Day with our collection of startups in the second cohort. The hybrid event was streamed live around the world via our YouTube channel and guests also joined us in Palisa in central Berlin. Our six Vision Health Pioneers Incubator 2021 startups pitched their healthcare innovation and took questions on their innovative solutions to healthcare problems.

The event included a keynote address from Dr Daniel Kraft M.D., leader in the future of health, medicine and technology. The Faculty Chair for Medicine, Singularity University and Founder and Chair, Exponential Medicine has previously given four fascinating TED Talks. The Demo Day was moderated by the cutting-edge video journalist and idea engine Nicole Scott. Nicole has been a leader in the tech world since the Blackberry was top dog and her first smartphone review happened years before we had even heard of an iPhone.[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”40″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Our Startups on an adventure in Spreewald!

Recently we went with our startups on an adventure into Spreewald! This beautiful part of Brandenburg (the state that wraps around Berlin) is only an hour from Berlin and famed for its beautiful waterways. The trip was part of our Community Program where our startups get to interact with each other and take a well-deserved breather from their activities.

Many of the recent events have taken place online due to the current world situation, so it was wonderful to meet up in person once more. We jumped in the kayaks, zoomed through the water, stopped for a delicious traditional lunch and then took off again, this with different rowing partners.

With an abundance of nature on the doorstep, Berlin is ideally located for taking breaks in green spaces and on the water. Here’s to the next adventure!

Here’s a selection of photos from our startups adventure in Spreewald:

Walk This May with Us!

Are you still in hibernation? Wake up!  May is National Walking month and we, here at #VisionHealthPioneers Incubator are embarking on a Walking Challenge to cover a whopping 999kms!

Why 999km you might wonder? It is exactly the distance from Berlin to the UN Refugee Agency headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Because we are not “just walking”. Aside from taking the opportunity to enjoy Berlin at its most beautiful in spring, this May, we will be raising money towards the UN Refugee Agency’s COVID-19 Urgent Appeal Fund. For every 1km of this 999km, Vision Health Pioneers Incubator will match a 1 Euro donation totalling 999 Euro.

Our Cause

We chose the UN Refugee Agency in recognition of the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on the world’s most vulnerable people. As the pandemic continues, COVID-19 has proven itself to be the greatest exposure of existing inequalities. While social distancing and hand washing may seem to a lot of us easy practices to follow, it is a privilege we take for granted. It assumes access to sanitation, running water and living spaces large enough to practice it.

Large proportions of the world’s refugee population live in cramped and impoverished camps or settlements, somewhere between their home countries and hopes of a better life. Even here in Germany their living conditions as they apply for asylum are crowded and rife with challenges.

The vulnerabilities that migrants and refugees experience run deep and have been in existence long before COVID-19.

It is with hopes that this global pandemic will in spite of all the suffering, bring to fore these structural inadequacies so that more people will be aware of the need to support these populations. The health of every person is linked to the health of the most marginalised and vulnerable members in a society.

Join us to not only raise money but also awareness for the healthcare and realisation of refugee human rights.

The teams

All our Batch #2 startups are battling, the incubator team have also dusted off their walking shoes and are participating as The Hot Steppers.

Man on a Mission: Medtech innovator Keith Grimes on what it takes to turn a dream into reality

While the global pandemic has brought a host of stressors for doctors like Keith Grimes, it has also – to his eyes, opened many meaningful doors that would otherwise have long remained shut.

The British general practitioner and medtech innovator has been campaigning for almost 30 years for the acceptance of digital health, and has garnered acclaim for his pioneering work in clinical VR and artificial intelligence.

Speaking to the virtual audience who tuned in to witness the first demo day of Vision Health Pioneers, he described seeing a “real explosion in the acceptance of digital health,” enabled by the urgent need to implement cutting-edge technologies that could improve patient care and relieve burden on healthcare workers.

This newfound openness has been a long time coming, Grimes said, describing how he has been advocating for the kinds of technologies that have been put in place in response to COVID-19. He faced a great deal of resistance along the way.

He was speaking at the first incubator Demo Day – a special milestone in celebrating the work of our entrepreneurs who have come up against a host of their own challenges through this extraordinary year.

Resistance to change is inevitable

While our entrepreneurs have experienced a host of difficulties this year, Grimes pointed out their fortune in having the opportunity to turn a dream into reality with the support of an incubator.

“I wish I had been able to join you when I was your age. Because I came out of medical school at the age of 23 and then dropped straight into this kind of conveyor belt that doctors have. There’s very little in the way of entrepreneurship within medicine. At least there wasn’t.”

That lack in entrepreneurship in healthcare is changing, especially now as the act of pursuing digital solutions becomes increasingly valued and accepted.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for you to make a really, really meaningful difference to people who are sometimes marginalized,” he said. “Digital healthcare is a great way of reaching out to people that might otherwise not be able to get care,” he added.

In his talk, Grimes expressed envy at the opportunity the incubators first cohort enjoyed, while offering great advice on how to manage and overcome the barriers that those championing change –like the current cohort of seven startups –frequently face.

“The important thing about facing any barriers is that – if you want to try and achieve change, if you want to try and achieve anything truly different, you are inevitably going to face resistance,” he said, adding that struggle and failure will have to be dealt with along the way.

A useful byproduct of struggle, he adds, is learning. Coming up against challenges provides you with opportunities to identify problems and determine the next way forward, he explained.

Grimes speaks with authority on the subject of pushing against barriers, having been confronted with many over the course of his career. The son of engineers who grew up with a strong passion for gaming (dreaming of a career writing games that his family vetoed), he pursued his second passion –medicine, and worked for twenty years on the frontline of primary care.

“Even when I went to medical school back in 1990, I was still really keen to try and use technology to improve patient care,” he said, describing a time that preceded the mass adoption of the internet, in which his enduring passion for technology reflected itself in efforts to explore and foster digital health solutions.

These efforts were waylaid owing to attitudes towards innovation at the UK’s National Health Service, which Grimes described as being ‘famously resistant to change and innovation up until now.’

Pushing against barriers brings up frustrations, he noted, adding that such difficult emotions are likely to arise amongst entrepreneurs operating today, too. Grimes reminded the cohort that it’s OK to feel frustrated sometimes, as much as it is understandable that obstacles will come along that might not make much sense.

“Resistance to change is universal, regardless of where you are. And, in some ways, it kind of doesn’t matter what evidence you bring to the party,” he said.

‘Find the problem first and foremost’

Grimes has had a fascinating and quite diverse career – besides working as a GP, he has also earned the title of Clinical Digital Health and Innovation Director at Babylon Health, leading digital doctors around the world, while also establishing VR Doctors, an online forum supporting the immersive health tech community.

His work has been fueled by an indefatigable drive to combine two passions: technology, and healthcare. Both passions excite him in quite different ways– the work of a doctor being driven by a sense of anxiety and dread that comes with trying to help people who are struggling with serious issues. The work of enabling technologies is stimulating in a very different way, he said.

“Being involved in the Startup space is a whole different energy, partly because you’re not holding life or death decisions that you do in clinical practise, which is nice,” he said, commending the upbeat albeit ‘tough’ nature of the startup world.

For those wanting to take a path similar to Grimes’ – that is, combining healthcare and technology in the pursuit of doing good – Grimes recommends focusing first on the grittier side of the work: the problem, as opposed to thinking more in terms of digital solutions.

“I encourage people, particularly if you’re working in healthcare, to find the problem first and foremost. It’s very tempting to sometimes lead with a solution. I’ve got a 3D printer here, you know. But it’s really, really important to understand the problem very intimately and be motivated by it for a long time,” he said.

Of Vision Health Pioneer’s first batch, Grimes pointed out that many of the teams had that background, whether it’s Advosense’s intimate understanding of geriatric care, or the personal experience INU Health brings to the project of exploring digital solutions to endometriosis.

This real-world experience combined with a dream for healthcare’s digitally-driven future is what drives Grimes’ mission as much as it does those of Vision Health Pioneers’ current and upcoming cohort– all of whom we are excited to help turn their visions into reality during this historic moment for digital health.
